Itinerary:
Day
1 - Melbourne to Wilsons Promontory
We begin our adventure early, travelling southeast through
the Dandenong Ranges and pastoral landscape of Victoria
to Wilsons Promontory National Park. We spend the entire
afternoon hiking, exploring the spectacular granite rock
formations, coastal flora and native wildlife (including
emus and wombats). Walk on squeaky beaches, watch the ocean
of Bass Strait pound on to the Australian mainland's most
southerly point. Overnight at Foster, a small, but pretty
town known for its dairy farming. (D)
Day
2 - Wilsons Promontory to Snowy River Country
Highlights today include Lakes Entrance and Australia's
longest beach - Ninety Mile Beach. Relax on the beach, taking
in the local sights and stretch out on a bush walk (seasonal
choice) later as we head north to Snowy
River High Country. Optional activities include horse riding
or fly down the zip wire (both at own expense). Tonight
we stay at a secluded 'comfy' retreat in the High Country
(B,D)
Day
3 - Snowy River Country to Jindabyne
We drive along the scenic Barry Way, watching the Snowy
River wind below us. Let the bus do all the work as we climb
high into the Australian Alps (seasonal Nov-May). Enjoy
rewarding hike along an alpine track (2.5hour round trip)
absorbing stunning views of the glacial "Blue Lake"
& the peak of Mt. Kosciuszko (the highest point in Australia).
During winter, (Jun-Oct) we visit
the ski village of Perisher/Smiggins for fun
in the snow (optional hire of toboggans or snow tubes at
own expense). Stay
overnight at the Lake Jindabyne Hotel, where you'll get
to enjoy the mountain life; perhaps a sauna, swim or drink
at the bar while taking in the magnificent view of the lake.
(B, D)
Day
3: Only this day -Hikes
up to more than 9kms.
Warning: Tours graded with ‘3 Boots’ (this day) are
only suitable for very fit people who enjoy long hike.
Day
4 - Jindabyne to Sydney via Canberra
Early risers may take the opportunity to fish in the
lake for trout or try optional activities including water
skiing and/or wake boarding (summer only and at own expense).
Later we pass through Cooma
, learning about Australia's great engineering feat the
'Snowy Hydro-Electirc Scheme. We then continue on to our
national's capital city of Canberra, checking out Parliament
House, Lake Burley Griffin and stunning views from Mt Ainsley,
before travelling on to Sydney arriving early evening. (B)
